Due: 12/5/18 Winner to be Announced: 12/9/18 Essay Contest: 6-12 graders
There are two common definitions of freedom in our society and culture today. Each definition is lived
out in a multitude of ways and complies with one of the two definitions below.
1.) Freedom is the ability to be all you can be, get all you can get, live life according to your dreams
and desires. Some nations protect and promote this definition, while others limit it according to
their understanding of the common good.
2.) Freedom is the ability to give yourself, in whole or part, to God’s will. To GIVE as you can to
others and to live according to God’s will. You can accept what others give you with love and
gratitude and see it as an expression of their freedom.
Let’s think about the freedom, and the options we have to respond, when we meet someone at a door.
act of freedom was definition 1 or 2? Consider how the other definition would change the results.
Conclude with your best understanding of freedom. Don’t forget to pray for discernment on at least 3 separate occasions before your final draft. If possible, refer to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1731-1748, www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/what-we-believe/catechism/catechism-of-the-catholic-church/to study the Church's' definition of freedom.
